How Our Hosting Service Spotted a Customer’s WordPress Hack

A customer of ours, we’ll call them “Acme, Inc.”, had the misfortune of having their WordPress hacked into. They had their own web developers manage their website and asked us to support their Hosting and Email services. Like any business, they relied on their website to support their marketing efforts and generate sales.

On a normal day, sun was shining, birds were chirping, we noticed something dark with their hosting account. There was a spike in activity that did not fit their normal traffic patterns. We didn’t know if the traffic was legitimate from a sudden wave of publicity or something else. The issue was flagged and our support team looked into the website. We found that not only was the website’s code changed but hackers also uploaded their own pages! They accessed the website through an outdated WordPress.

The customer was informed and we ordered our WordPress Unhack service. We first cleaned the infected files and removed any foreign content. We then copied the website onto our Test Server to complete the restoration. This was done to prevent the customer’s live traffic from experiencing any issues while we made changes to the site files. The website was restored within 24 hours once we updated their WordPress, plugins, upgraded their code and security, and removed several other potential vulnerabilities to better secure the website.

Websites that aren’t properly managed come across all sorts of similar issues. It’s important to have someone you can rely on to stand behind your website. Acme, Inc. signed up for our WordPress service to make sure their website was always in good standing.

If this has happened to you or someone you know, give us a call! We’d love to help.
