IWD was excited to lend its web expertise to the AMFM Canada Forced Marriage Project. This inspired awareness and education initiative is working to bring to light an issue that affects people all over the world. Unfortunately, here in Canada it’s slipped under our radar, costing us the precious understanding needed to make a change. AMFM offers workshops, presentations and a solid online presence as an effort to encourage victims of forced marriage to speak out.
The site, beautifully designed by Yael at Franklin Heavy, is a one stop shop for both activists and victims. It acts as a guide to understanding forced marriages, empowering visitors with a list of terms and definitions, marriage laws, and frequently asked questions. A directory of forced marriage in the news spans print media and web, as well as offering picks for inspirational arts on the topic. The site is a safe place where victims gain insight into their rights and learn what kind of aid is out there for them. There are simple instructions for clearing your browser’s cache so no one will know you visited if that’s an issue.
Built to compliment AMFM’s belief in the strength of community, the site offers an opportunity to connect with others affected by the issue as well as those who want to be part of the solution. Faces are given to names in the form of unique profiles of women who have taken a stand against their forced marriage, including video content to bring their inspirational stories to life. For those who want to create their own community for change, a “circle of support” vow is available as a starting point. Visitors can join the AMFM community with their social media platforms linked onto the site.
We’re looking forward to seeing how AMFM’s inspiring work changes lives in days to come.
